Lucas Kevin Brooks Books

In Lucas, fifteen-year-old Caitlin McCann is experiencing one of the most difficult periods of her life. Her best friend, the bold and pig-headed Bill, seems to be losing her mind when she takes up with the roughest crowd on Hale Island. Her brother Dominic, home from college for the summer, seems to be a completely different boy from who she used to know--a phony intellectual on one hand and a clueless party boy on the other. Her father, a reclusive and somber writer, seems to be quietly stewing in his own misery. And her good friend Simon, a goofy and slightly dorky loner, is taking far more than a friendly interest in her. With all of this on her plate, Caitlin meets the mysterious Lucas, a nomadic boy whom the inhabitants of Hale Island know absolutely nothing about. Caitlin admires Lucas's freedom and survivalist mentality, and the two form a friendly bond based solely on their curiousity of one another. However, the people on the small island are not as warm to the boy. They see him as an outsider, a threat, and unwanted edition to their perfectly established community. When a major misunderstanding surrounding a little girl occurs, the people of Hale Island are out for Lucas's blood, and Caitlin tries her hardest to save him from their violence. The most striking theme in this novel is that of prejudice. It alarmed me that a young boy could be treated so cruelly by the members of a community just because he is an "outsider." If you are looking for a cute summer romp between a teenage boy and girl (as the summary on this site subtley implies) this is not the book for you. This is not The Last Song, so don't expect Miley Cyrus in a skimpy dress and her hot volleyball player boyfriend to show up and relieve from the heartache. Lucas deals with hate in its purest form, but provides a ray of hope in the innocent romance of Caitlin and the misunderstood nomad. You will sympathize with Caitlin. You will laugh at certain parts. You might even roll your eyes at the ridiculous behavior of some of the characters. But if you have a heart beating in your chest at all, you will shed many tears for the beautiful boy whom Caitlin comes to love.

Lucas Kevin Brooks Books Reviews

Purchased this book used. Item was listed as very good. This book was in the worst possible condition. I have never seen a book look this bad. The only place this book belonged was the garbage. It should never have been sold for any amount. The book was discolored, smelled bad, torn, creased, ripped, marked in, pages missing, binding broke, etc. Very disappointed! Very misleading seller.
This book was very unfulfilling and was too short to be much good. Parts of it were good, but the overall story was very poor. I highly recommend the book "Black RabbitmSummer" by this same author. That book was amazing, changed my way of looking at people and everything, and is my of my all time favorites.
One of the best books I have ever read. It has so much meaning behind everything that happens. It's a must read!
One of my favorite books! I haven't read any of Kevin Brook's other books that I know of but this book is amazing. You just get sucked into Cait's world and you don't want to put the book down.
Recently Meghan Cox Gurdon wrote an article for the Wall Street Journal that discussed why Young Adult fiction was getting too dark and there was nothing out that that parents would want to buy for their young adults to read. Obviously, neither she nor the mother in the article, Amy Freeman, bothered to look at this book. Yes, it covers heavy themes. It's about racism and bigotry, it touches on teen drinking and sex (GASP! Heaven forbid we read anything of the sort!!!) but it never glamorizes any of it. If anything, it made me cringe, and I was in my early 20s the first time I read this book. This book is so well written and it left me stunned and crying. I loved it so much that I actually wrote the author to tell him. He was kind enough to reply, and while this book is definitely his best, I have been a fan ever since. This is the book I buy everyone for their birthday. It is amazing and life changing. You won't be disappointed.
Beautiful book !!! Read it !
I've read this book years ago and it still keeps me captivated. This is just a well written book, it really awakens your emotions and makes you wonder what kids go through now a days. I highly recommend this book, especially high school kids. I think they will connect on a deep level with this book.
