Take a Chance on Me A Something New Novel Jennifer Dawson 9781420134254 Books Reviews

I really liked 'Take a Chance On Me'! It’s a fast-paced, humorous, hard-to-put-down read!

At 28, Maddie Donovan has never been on her own. She still lives with her mom, and has been with Steve, her fiancé since she was 15! She has always had her mother, brother, and Steve telling her what to do. On her wedding day, as she is getting ready to walk down the isle, panics sets in, and she makes her escape by climbing out the church window! Several hours later, still in her wedding dress, she finds herself walking down a dark highway in the middle of nowhere. She heads toward the only thing she can see, a red neon bar sign. She has no idea what she’s going to do, but one thing is for sure...she’s not going back home.

When Maddie walks into his bar, Mitch Riley is very intrigued by her, not to mention she is completely adorable, especially wearing her wedding dress and tiara. She looks like a princess, which is what he calls her. He offers to help, but with her newfound independence, she refuses him. He finally persuades Maddie to let him help her, but it's not easy, and she fights him every step of the way. Being with Maddie makes Mitch feel more alive than he's felt in years.

Maddie is really cute and funny. She is so determined to do this on her own, but with no clothes and no money it is kinda hard to do without some help. Mitch is falling hard for her and tries everything he can think of to convince her to stay, but he also understands her need for freedom. As one day turns into another, the closer they become. Maddie finds she can tell him things she could never tell anyone else, and Mitch also confides in Maddie. He tells her all about how he was a big lawyer in Chicago and how he came to own the bar.

When scandal hits Mitch's family, and someone threatens to take Mitch down with his father. Mitch withdraws from Maddie, and their relationship becomes fragile. Maddie wants to help and enlists the aid of her brothers. But when Mitch finds out he feels betrayed, will he ever forgive her?

I love the small town atmosphere in this story (because, well, it is a small town). Everyone knows each other and news spreads like wildfire! For example, Mitch’s neighbor Gracie brings Maddie some clothes early the next morning before she even meets her because her brother Sam told her about Maddie showing up at the bar the night before. There are NO secrets!

'Take a Chance On Me' is a great book, and I really enjoyed reading it! There were more than a few times it had me laughing out loud. It's one I would recommend reading.

I would give this story a mature rating for sexual content and strong language.

Disclaimer I received an e-copy of the book for my honest opinion.
I wish I could have given this 5 stars, because the author tells a great story, and she developed the characters very well. I’m subtracting one star because of an error that runs throughout the entire novel. When there is a transition from one “scene” to the next, there should be a space between paragraphs, a different chapter, a little mark to indicate it, or something! There was nothing; I’d be reading a scene between H and h, and the next sentence would be about two different characters in a completely different location.
When you’re reading along and have to come to a screeching halt, then backpedal to figure out what the heck happened, it’s very distracting to the reader, as it really interrupts the flow. I hope in the future that the author will make it obvious that she’s finished with one scenario before going into another, and that will elevate the reading experience greatly. Other than that, the book was great.
Another reviewer called this a "feel-good, sexy read" and I couldn't agree more. Maddie and Mitch are characters you want to root for, and there was just enough story aside from their romance to keep it interesting without overwhelming their chemistry. The naughty parts are hot, the romantic moments are sweet, and if you're in the mood for a romance which will leave you smiling, take a chance on this one.
Loved this story. I can't wait to read the rest of the series! It's very enthralling and relatable to women everywhere.
love the story and the read
Really love this series and the first book sets everything up so nicely. The characters are great and the writing is fantastic!
Maddie Donovan ran out of her own wedding to her high school sweetheart and is now in a small town called Revival. Low on cash, tired and dirty, she decides to abandon her “good girl” reputation and get drunk in a bar. With nowhere to go, Maddie reluctantly accepts the bartender’s completely platonic offer to stay at his place. Good idea in theory, bad idea in reality.

Jaded bartender Mitch Riley has seen and heard just about everything but is surprised by Maddie’s sudden appearance in the bar. With enough troubles of his own, the last thing Mitch should be doing is taking on someone else’s troubles but Maddie’s combination of tough girl attitude and vulnerable woman is irresistible. Against his better judgment, Mitch invites her to stay at his place until she gets back on her feet. Living in such close quarters, Mitch can’t help but fall for Maddie and try and convince her to give him a chance.

I totally read this series out of order. I started with book three which is out soon but it was so good that I just had to back track and snag Take a Chance on Me when it was on sale.

So Maddie is a runaway bride but she isn’t a fickle woman. She’s a character who suffers from an extreme case of guilt and has tried for years to curb her naturally outgoing, passionate and daring personality in favor of what she thinks her family wants A docile, eager to please, malleable, married woman. Poor woman, I felt for her. Guilt can make you do the stupidest things. She’s the only girl in a family of alpha males but instead of that family being tyrants, they’re wonderful!

I’m so tired of reading about awful families who are selfish and cruel yet are still “family” that the Donovans were a breath of fresh air. They were supportive of Maddie once she came clean about why she ran out of her wedding. Her brothers weren’t meat heads who had their brains in their biceps; they actually listened to Maddie and didn’t try to take control of her life, even when they knew she was struggling to figure things out. I envied Maddie her brothers!

Now, Mitch wasn’t so lucky with his family. Talk about cold and dysfunctional! And Mitch was well on his way to being the same kind of user and all around selfish so and so until his reputation was abruptly smashed and he was forced to leave Chicago in order to restart his life. The author did a great job in painting a picture of Mitch before he came to Revival and emphasizing that while he was a different person than before, that part of him that was selfish and cold wasn’t completely gone. He wasn’t a wholesome guy, and there were unlikable parts of him but for me that’s what made him a good character. He had a past where he wasn’t a good guy at all. He may have done a lot of changing when he came to Revival but I don’t think he was truly humbled until he almost lost Maddie. That’s when Mitch became a solid good guy.

Mitch’s one trait that had me swooning over him was his understanding that Maddie had to find her way back to her old self on her own. He was respectful of the fact that she didn’t want or need to be saved, much less told what to do. Maddie made her decisions, right or wrong and Mitch was there to love her regardless. Even when Maddie did to Mitch what she didn’t want him to do to her, these two were still a positive match.

Take a Chance on Me introduces an entire hoard it seems of supporting characters, each one likable, each one with memorable personalities. Maddie’s brothers Shane, Evan and James couldn’t be more different from each other, Maddie’s friends Penelope and Sophie are so supportive and caring of Maddie in their separate ways, Penelope is the calm one and Sophie is the ball buster. Then there’s Mitch’s best friend Gracie and her brother Sam, two siblings who are opposites in every way. They’re a fun crowd and I want all of them to have their own books!

Final Verdict I need to get the second book in this series and I can't wait for future books!
This book was an unexpected pleasure! I really enjoyed Maddie and how she made her way in the world and found strength through Mitch.
