Wow, every once in a while, you read a book, and feel like you've encountered deep new soul friendships.... in the characters and author of the book who have left imprints on your heart.Sid reads like poetic verse, but turns pages so quickly that it's hard to put it down. How does Feng do it, in telling these two rich life stories in just 150 pages?
But what I love most is how the story of Sid, the story of Siddhartha, truly parallel our own stories, and the challenges of our life and time right now. No need to wait... for it is unfolding in each moment. Thank you!

I was deeply moved by this book. It is rich, meditative poem in prose about the life of the historical Buddha Siddhartha, and of Sid, whose story echoes more than just the name of Siddhartha. The mythology of the Buddha's early years as an ascetic seeker and teacher creates the backdrop for the the story of Sid, the gifted child of a widowed professor of "dead languages." The secondary characters also have important voices in the story, especially the wives of Siddhartha and Sid, who provide thoughts and perspectives that are often missing from the Siddhartha narrative. A companion cast of animal characters reminds the reader that all of this human drama is part of the wider natural world. The author's skill as a poet and wordsmith is undeniable, and the illustrations are simple yet illuminating of the text. The book is not long, but it is rich, and invites re-reading.
This is a small book, rich in Buddhism, written by a Zen Master. Told in brief episodes and from many perspectives, the story of the Buddha is told in two parallel story lines, the traditional one about the Buddha and a contemporary one about Sid. Those who know something of the traditional story will enjoy the new versions of mythological elements, sort of like reading the Lightening Thief if you are familiar with Greek myth. It’s clever. If you listen for Buddhism and Zen you will hear it, whether in the teaching of math, conversation about the Transformers or advice of the midwife “Astonishing isn’t it, Sid? … it’s a rude shock, a routine slap meant to make you breathe yourself alive.” If you look, it teaches. With their lives mirroring each other, this work answers what the modern life of a Buddha might look like, what Buddhism can address. Instead of withdrawing to a monastery, the modern Buddha is found dealing with wife and son in an ordinary life. Beautifully written, sometimes mysterious, at other times poignant and humorous, I found it a delightful read.
Very intriguing, and very well written,
Sandy
Read it!! Novel, poetry? So sublime.
With her poetry-infused prose, this award-winning writer conveys so much in a single image. When she mentions a young rabbit, full of life and immediacy, she says "It's all one to him, a universe of energetic joy that he is destined and determined to attain." Her book is her wish and her effort to help each one of us realize that same universe.
